National Obesity Forum 6th & 7th October 2008 in London

wlsinfo was represented by Michelle, Jeanette & Aideen at this years National Obesity Forum held on the 6th and 7th October 2008 in London.

The National Obesity Forum was established in 2000 to raise awareness of the growing impact of obesity on society and the impact this has on the National Health Service. Some of the aims of the Forum are to create recognition of obesity as a serious medical problem, provide education and training on obesity management and provide a network and support for health professionals. They also aim to convince the Government to give obesity a high priority.

It was extremely rewarding to see the interest wlsinfo generated at the event. Most of the health care professionals had heard good things about wlsinfo from their patients. Those attending their first event, appeared interested in the charity and the work we do and we explained how wlsinfo provides a forum where people can get together online and provide each other with support, advice and encouragement in a non-threatening, non-judgemental environment.

Many requested literature and cards to distribute to patients. The general consensus was that weight loss surgery is not a quick fix and requires ongoing follow-up and continued support.

It was extremely encouraging to speak to people and see how attitudes and views have changed over the years. All the professionals spoken to agreed that it is necessary to provide a complete solution to weight loss and not just the surgery itself. This needs to include psychotherapy, ongoing dietary advice, surgery, aftercare and plastic surgery where required. Although most PCTs do not necessarily subscribe to this, it was heartening to see that this is the direction healthcare professionals working in obesity management appear to be heading.

It was an extremely successful two days. We were was proud to be representing wlsinfo and to be part of a community that provides a forum for all different people, with one common issue to come together and support one another, providing the kind of support not available on the NHS. The type of support that only people going through, or having been through can understand.
